Creating the unique concept of the Re Generation was a journey involving lateral thinking, some inspired breakthroughs and a clever combination of smart technology. Developed with assistance from the Federal Government's Industry Cooperative Innovation Program, the Re Generation is revolutionising the skills market.
We encourage you to first read through the Overview in our Frequently Asked Questions, then take a closer look at the Re Generation and the principles behind it…
The Re Generation are the skills generation – a network of people whose age, gender, ethnicity, and physicality are irrelevant.
They are individuals who either possess - or are willing to acquire - the unique 'skills signature®' that organisations or consumers either need now, will need soon, or are likely to need in the future.
No matter…
…the Re Generation has a way to help you manage your skills assets - just as you have learned to manage other forms of wealth.
We have created the online National Skills Bank™ to enable skills to be traded and/or valued by the market.
the Re Generation ensures its members are serviced by 4 key aspects of the system:
A Skills Signature® is the sum total of a person's unique set of skills and talents. Our individual skills help define who we are; they enrich us, but are often underutilised, unrecognised, and undervalued – by employers, or even by ourselves.
A Skills Signature® is not a resume. In fact, it's much more significant. A resume is merely a static application defined in response to an advertised job, or the job market in general. But the Skills Signature® is a fluid and pro-active expression of a person's self. It defines how they ideally would like to be seen and allows them to express their personal preferences regarding skills they would prefer to apply in life.
Unlike a resume, a Skills Signature® is not hierarchical, simply justifying the principal occupational category. The Skilsl Signature® is a representation of you, rather than of an occupation. It might include your occupational skills, but also other skills unrelated to your career.
the Re Generation members are able to fine-tune and change the skills that make up their Skills Signature® at any time. This flexibility is totally unique, and allows the whole system to work to your benefit.
National and State leaders are openly expressing the need to counter the potential negative effects on Australia's economic growth of both an ageing population and a national skills crisis.
Many people face the prospect of retrenchment, redundancy, and retirement as a direct result of allowing their skills wealth to depreciate over time to the point where market "interest rates" in their skills falls to negative levels.
A cornerstone of the Re Generation philosophy is this: Australians must treat their abilities as a wealth that can only retain value and sustain relevance through constant skill regeneration.
To achieve and maintain that essential positive "market interest rate" for their own skills, the Re Generation will encourage members to refresh their skills and Skills Signature® by monitoring reports we'll provide, and through informal and formal education to keep themselves abreast of changes in their areas of expertise.
Conversely, there are some forms of knowledge that are precious and rare – and therefore, perennially valuable. Members who have invested a lifetime developing knowledge on a specific subject or activity will benefit greatly by creating a Skills Signature® that focuses on this area of expertise.
the Re Generation are not defined by their birth date. They are the rich and diverse vein of skilled and talented people, across all generations, who want to utilise the reach of the internet to develop and apply their preferred skills.
Members of the Re Generation include professional people, artists, tradespeople, academics, craftspeople, tutors, consultants, hobbyists…anyone who is enthused to manage their skills, talents, and knowledge on-line.
Members may be currently employed, underemployed, or unemployed. Some will be retired, while others are planning to return to the workforce following a prolonged absence, such as raising a family.
There are 4 generations of Australians in our working population, and all of them are part of the Re Generation:
| Generation | D.O.B | Current Age Range | Government Classification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silent | c.1925-1944 | 62 - 81 | Seniors (65+) |
| Baby Boomer | c.1945 - 1964 | 42 - 61 | Mature (45-64) |
| Generation X | c.1965 - 1978 | 28 - 41 | Prime (25-44) |
| Generation Y | c.1979 – 1994 | 12 - 27 | Youth (15-24) |
Virtually everyone has something to gain from the Re Generation. For many, joining will be a life changing decision.
Below you'll find some typical scenarios. You might recognise yourself, or friends and colleagues within this list.
| Scenario | Member Benefit |
|---|---|
I am employed but am unhappy My skills are unrecognised and rarely used | You can list your preferred skills (the skills you would rather put to use) and gauge market interest - quite possibly finding new employment and gaining far greater satisfaction. Coming soon, the ‘Market Interest' Reports we'll provide you on the most searched skills sets will enable fine-tuning of your Skills Signature® relative to market demand. |
I am nearing retirement age but I must/want to continue working – on a more flexible basis. | Here, you have the opportunity to audit the skills and experience you've created and focus on those that are the most rewarding to apply. Your skills signature® for the next stage of your life may be completely different to the stage prior. A teacher may redefine themselves as a tutor or translator; a builder as a consultant to new home buyers. |
I have been out of the workforce for many years and I don't know how to get back I have been unemployed for a while now and am close to giving up on ever returning to work again | Sometimes it's better to look forward to work than to go back to work. Often going back isn't an option because ‘back' isn't there anymore. Using your existing skills as a base you can begin crafting a Skills Signature® that represents the work you can look forward to. It may require some retraining but you can be reassured that this will enable you to become relevant to market demand As eBay® has proven with goods, you can be surprised that what you take for granted, others will take for gold. |
I have been retired for a few years and need to start earning some money I am retired but I feel I've got a lot to offer. | The skills you have acquired and lived with for many years – at work and through personal passions and hobbies will almost certainly be of value to many people. Get friends and family to help you sort and select the knowledge and abilities you have to offer. Create a custom Skills Signature® and proactively test the market. Remember, you can fine-tune your list of skills as often as you like. |
Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive list of scenarios. We would love to hear how the Re Generation is empowering its members – so please get in touch and tell us your own stories
